'we Educate

We believe in education as a way to get children, parents and adults interested in riding a bicycle. Some of our goals are to sponsor and offer bike safety clinics, volunteer in bicycle rodeos, partner with other organizations that also believe in bicycle education.

Ycycle is committed to educating new and experienced riders on all the reasons to cycle. In the next year we will be organizing the first annual “Free Ycycle Green-Fit-Fun Ride” to raise awareness and provide cycling related education. We will also offer “Safe Cycling” clinics to Schools and Businesses.

Jerry Barton from EDCTC (www.edctc.org) co-instructed with Myron Dong a Safe Cycling lunch time (1 hour) seminar at DST Output in El Dorado Hills.  HWY 50 TMA also supplied food and drinks from Karen's Bakery.  Topics included tips on commuting, finding a safe route, what equipment is needed, where to ride in traffic and lane positioning when making turns at intersections.  Lots of information and May is Bike Month T-shirts were given to all participants.

Ycycle joined HWY 50 corridor TMA in a Safe Cycling Clinic at St. John Notre Dame School.  It was a lot of fun for kids, teachers and volunteers.  What was amazing was how much the kids appreciated learning about safe cycling.  Bicycle Planet with volunteers from Intel and Ycycle gave safety checks and minor tune-ups to over 250 bicycles!  Over 45 kids rode their bikes to school that day - just amazing!

Feb 27, 28 and March 1st
Please join me in congratulating fifteen new League Certified Instructors! After three days of Bicycle Education instruction given by Jim Baross we feel prepared to teach others about Bicycle Safety. A Sac Region LCI Coordinating Committee has been formed. The committee will collect and forward requests for “Smart Cycling" noon-time clinics and other courses. It will also provide a list of LCI’s.

If your School, Business or Organization is interested in Safe Cycling Education we will provide information and willing instructors. Please contact us and we will connect you with the right people.

My personal goal is to give several clinics this year. I will co-instruct my first clinic with an experienced LCI. My focus is on Schools, children and parents. Stay tuned as I receive my first assignment and head down the road of Bicycle Education.

February 6 and February 7th, 2009
One of our own is in the process of getting (League Certified Instructor) LCI certified. The certification is offered by the League of American Bicyclists (www.Bikeleague.org). One a cold evening and following day, a group of 18 candidates met and were instructed by Owen Howlett. The class was well organized and included materials as well as a very encouraging and skilled instructor. The hands on part of the course on that Saturday took us all over Mid-Town Sacramento. We practices techniques to safely merge, ride with traffic and cross intersections. I learned many new skills and saw cycling from the vantage point of an educator.

Description of the (League Certified Instructor) LCI from the League website:

“Becoming a League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certified to teach BikeEd is a great way to help cyclists in your community. Certified instructors can teach BikeEd classes to children as well as adults. Help bring the joy of safe cycling to others. If you are an experienced cyclist and would like to teach others please consider taking the next step towards certification. Road I is a prerequisite for a certification seminar. Instructors are trained at seminars held periodically throughout the year."
