advocacy (noun) - active support of an idea or cause etc.; especially the act of pleading or arguing for something.
The first part of this definition conveys Ycycle's mission to promote access to trails, the inclusion of bike paths and commuter lanes in planning, and more. Sadly, the second part is often the reality. Whether it's negotiating with the Bureau of Land Management or National Forest Service for exclusion of bicycles from classification as Motorized Vehicles and thus prohibition from use in our wild spaces, or deliberation with developers for inclusion of bicycle lanes in their proposals, lots of unsung hero's are hard at work behind the scenes. Despite the bicycles long history as a mode of transportation or recreation, there are still plenty of challenges to it's inclusivity.
Ycycle does not seek to reinvent this wheel. Instead we aim to partner with and promote the efforts of the many fine organizations who labor on the behalf of all cyclists. More importantly, we hope to strengthen their efforts by introducing all levels of riders to opportunities for volunteering, stewardship, and membership both locally and nationally. By providing a conduit between interested parties, we believe the collective efforts will result in greater awareness, participation, and success in bicycle advocacy. Through information portals, interviews with local and national agencies, interactive forums, and more, we are confident Ycycle can contribute to the ongoing efforts to provide increased access to what are, in the end, our public lands and roads.
